The Science & Technology (S & T) Policy of India stresses on the dissemination of scientific knowledge and inculcation of scientific temper among the masses. Most of the S & T and related institutions or laboratories have a social mandate for science popularization and development of scientific temper among the masses. Even the Constitution of India has a special provision ‘to develop the scientific temper, humanism and spirit of enquiry’. Being the leading Science Communicator in India and having largest network of Science Centres/museums in the world, NCSM collaborated with Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani to start a Masters course in Science Communication.
Today, science communication is a fast emerging field of scientific enterprise both in the developed and developing countries. Recent development in the field of Science and Technology is not properly disseminated in general public. Also, the little coverage and poor presentation of S & T in different media is well recognized.
Therefore, trained science communicators, journalists, writers, reporters etc. are in great demand in different S & T and related institutions or laboratories, media houses and other such organisations.
Recognizing this scenario, The National Council for Science Museums (NCSM) in collaboration with BITS, Pilani, is offering a two-year regular M. Tech degree programme in science communication at its headquarter in Kolkata. The course aims to train science graduates as skilled science communicators and equip them to present science intelligibly and effectively to the masses.
The M. Tech course in ‘Science Communication’ is a four-semester, professional degree wherein the student is expected to learn from the History and Philosophy of Science to the art of Mass Communication with a focus to science dissemination and the application of the most modern technologies in science communication.
NCSM runs the single largest chain of Science Centres in the world. Besides creating hugely popular science centres, NCSM also endeavours in creating new technologies and display techniques used in public science expositions. There is a social mandate for non-formal mode of education practiced by NCSM. With this profound practical experience in science communication, NCSM shares the responsibility of designing the M. Tech course conducting it and providing the most appropriate and state-of-the-art training ground.
The faculty support is from the Smithsonian Institution, USA. The visiting faculty also includes faculty from Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, National Institute of Design etc.
