A robotics corner was inaugurated by Dr. M. P. Pillai, Director, National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology, Calicut at Regional Science Centre and Planetarium, Calicut on 25th June 2014. The centre has procured a humanoid robot from Korea which can dance, play football and can also do acrobatics. This robotics corner will inspire young students in particular and common public in general about this particular filed.

On the occasion, Dr. Pillai also inaugurated a two-day workshop on robotics organised under the aegis Tech Fed, a collective of students pursuing technical courses in different universities, in association with the RSC.

Robotics engineer Sunil Paul, who is leading different sessions at the workshop, said the programme would help to dispel various misconceptions about the discipline of robotics and throw lights on the immense possibilities of the stream in the changing scheme of things.

Mr. Paul demonstrated the flight of a remote-controlled multi-rotor helicopter, which also is a kind of robot, on the RSC premises as part of the workshop. He said the device could be used for different purposes, including recreational (film shooting), law enforcement (to observe the scene of crime or violence) and military applications. The flying object mounted with GPS, on board sensors and compass could also be used for delivering objects such as goods and merchandise to a programmed destination in the future.

“Rigorous research is on to increase the weight-lifting capacity and the flying time of this device,” he said maintaining that the robotics sector was all set to throw up huge job opportunity in the near future.

Around 50 students from the Malabar region participated in the workshop, which was aimed at students who are planning to join engineering colleges.
