Programs on National Science Day and Closing ceremony of the exhibition ‘Superbugs The End of Antibiotics?’ organised at Science City, Kolkata

On the occasion of National Science Day and as a closing ceremony of the exhibition ‘Superbugs: The End of Antibiotic?’, Science City Kolkata organised various programs like Regional Workshop on AMR and Superbugs, Hands-on demonstration on Health & Hygiene, Open House Quiz and Sit & Draw Competition for students and underprivileged children.

Shri Subhabrata Chaudhuri, Director, Science City, Kolkata welcomed the guests present at the venue and said – ‘The exhibition was inaugurated at the Science City, Kolkata on January 25 and within the short period of a month more than 1.28 lakhs visitors have been directly benefitted by visiting the exhibition. In addition to this we reached out to people throughout Kolkata through our canter activity. On the other hand, through the Social Media we have taken the messages of the exhibition to more than 20 lakhs people. I hope the exhibition was an eye opener for many people and they will start using antibiotics responsibly’.

Dr. Anjan Mukherjee, Consultant Microbiologist, Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata, Dr. Punyasloke Bhadury, Professor, IISER, Kolkata and Ms. Sananda Chakraborty, Nursing Supervisor, ICU, Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata were experts in the workshop and shared their views about Antibiotic Resistance and Superbugs to the underprivileged children. Ms. Sananda Chakraborty demonstrated the necessity of Hand Hygiene through various charts which included when to wash or sanitise hand. She also demonstrated the Hand washing techniques and requested everyone present there to share the ways of hand washing with other members of their family as well as with friends. She also showed that Medicines with Red stripe shouldn’t be used without a valid prescription of a doctor. After the workshop, students asked their questions which was responded back by the experts.

While Open House Quiz was organised on National Science Day and Superbugs, the theme for painting competition was ‘Healthy Living’. More than 50 students and underprivileged children participated in the competition.

It may be noted that, initially the exhibition was inaugurated by Dr Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Shri Prahlad Singh Patel, Hon’ble Minister of State (I/C), Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India at National Science Centre, Delhi (Septembar 6 –November 17, 2019). Then the exhibition was further organised at Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai (December 18, 2019 – February 16, 2020) and Visvesvarya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore (November 23, 2020- January 3, 2021).
