Inauguration of new large format film VOYAGER: THE NEVER-ENDING JOURNEY at Science City, Kolkata

The film takes the visitors on a thrilling journey to the Jovial planets and their moons

A new large format film “Voyager: The Never-Ending Journey” was inaugurated today by the noted film director, actor and physician Dr. Kamaleswar Mukherjee in the fulldome digital theatre of Science City, Kolkata in the presence of Shri Samarendra Kumar, DDG, NCSM, Shri Pramod Grover, Director-In-Charge, Science City, Kolkata and other guests.

This fulldome film tells a thrilling story of the most amazing space mission in human history. Launched in 1977, the two space probes, Voyager 1 & 2 explored the farthest planets of the solar system—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune along with their moons. “Voyager: The Never-Ending Journey” is a visually stunning 30-minute-long featurette in both 2D and 3D format. These spacecrafts greatly enriched our knowledge of the distant worlds. Now after four decades, they explore interstellar space. Like two bottles launched into the cosmic ocean, both probes carry an interstellar message – the Golden Record, intended for any alien civilization. The film has garnered several nominations and won “Science Presenting Award”, “The Best Special Effect Design Film Award”, “Audience-Choice” awards etc. across national and international film festivals.

The fulldome theatre of Science City is capable of screening high resolution, fulldome digital 2D and 3D content and Planetarium Shows by utilising six, high end, digital projectors with an effective screen resolution of at least about 30 million pixels, the product of a seamless blend on a completely new 23 degree tilted, 23-metre diameter dome using Ulteria Seam technology which utilizes a specialised seamless joining process. This facility provides an immersive experience and the viewers feel as if they are being transported into the scenes that are being viewed and the objects in projection appear close enough to touch in 3D shows”- said Shri Samarendra Kumar, DDG, NCSM.

Established in 1997, the Space Theatre at Science City was the first of its kind facility in India that attracted around 77 lakh visitors during its operation for around two and a half decade time. After its upgradation in 2019 into India’s first fulldome 2D and 3D digital theatre, it has become even more popular among the people of Kolkata.

The films screened in this fulldome digital theatre of Science City not only acquaint the audiences with the spectacular features of science but also provide an immersive experience. The film “Voyager: The Never-Ending Journey”, takes the audience on a thrilling journey to the jovial planets and their moons. About 5-6 shows of this film will be screened on a daily basis between 11 am to 5 pm with narration in English, Hindi and Bengali”. In addition to this, the film “Luminaries of Bengal”, which was recently inaugurated by the Hon’ble Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, is also screened twice a day for the visitors – said Shri Pramod Grover, Director-In-Charge, Science City, Kolkata.
